Description

The Oral Language Assessment evaluates your ability to communicate orally in your official second language (English or French). The test is administered by a certified language assessor from the Public Service Commission and includes questions related to work situations. If you are not currently working, the situations may relate to studies or volunteer activities.

  • FORMAT
  • The language test will be administered remotely via the internet using a web conferencing tool (MS Teams) and will take approximately 20 to 40 minutes, including the pre-test instructions.
  • Here are the details of the remote administration:
  • Platform: The test will be conducted using MS Teams.
  • Duration: The test will take approximately 20 to 40 minutes, including the pre-test instructions.
  • Identification: The assessor will begin by confirming your identity using the video function of MS Teams. The assessor will then use only the audio function for the remainder of the test.
  • Location: You do not need to be in a government office to take the test. However, you should make arrangements to take the test alone in a quiet environment where you will not be disturbed for the duration of the test.
  • Here are some additional tips for taking the test remotely:
  • Ensure you have a stable internet connection.
  • Use a headset with a microphone to ensure clear audio quality.
  • Choose a quiet location where you will not be interrupted.
  • Close any unnecessary programs or applications on your computer.
  • Familiarize yourself with the MS Teams interface beforehand.
  • Test your audio and video settings before the test begins.

  • vous devez faire ce test honnêtement, par vous-même, sans l’aide d’autres personnes ni d’aucune ressource;
  • il pourrait y avoir des conséquences graves si toute forme de tricherie ou de fraude était soupçonnée;

STRUCTURE

Your assessor will guide you through the test. No special preparation is required. Answer the questions to the best of your ability.

Your assessor will encourage you to demonstrate that you meet the requirements of the different proficiency levels by asking you carefully crafted questions.

The test gradually becomes more difficult:

  • The test begins with simple questions about your work or other familiar activities. Your answers to these questions allow the assessor to determine if you can demonstrate Level A skills.
  • From there, the test becomes more difficult as it progresses to questions designed to elicit responses from you that will demonstrate Level B and then Level C skills, as defined by the Treasury Board Secretariat of Canada’s Official Languages Qualification Standards.
  • The assessor will use your answers to assess your ability to communicate clearly in your official second language. The assessor will determine the questions to be asked and when they have obtained a sufficient language sample to assess your performance. Therefore, the assessor may occasionally redirect the conversation even if you feel that you have not said everything you could have said on a given topic.

Factors that do not affect your score:

  • It is not uncommon to lose track of one’s thoughts when speaking. If this happens to you, tell the assessor. They will help you get back on track.
  • If you do not know the answer to a question or find it difficult to talk about a particular topic for personal or confidential reasons, let the assessor know. They will then change the subject or ask you another question.
  • You can also take a short break to think about what you would like to say before answering the questions, but this should not impair the fluency of the communication.

Making mistakes:

  • Don’t worry too much about your mistakes.
  • If you can’t find a particular word, use another word to explain what you mean.
  • If you are aware of your mistakes and think you would be more comfortable correcting them, do so. However, remember that overcorrecting can hinder the fluency of communication.

This test assesses your ability to serve the Canadian public in your official second language (French or English) at work; therefore:

  • You must take this test honestly, on your own, without the help of others or any resources;
  • There could be serious consequences if any form of cheating or fraud is suspected;
  • The manager who requested the test may choose to reassess you at any time before or after your appointment to a position.
Additional Notes:
  • The test will take approximately 20 to 40 minutes.
  • The test will be conducted using MS Teams.
  • You will need a stable internet connection and a headset with a microphone.
  • Choose a quiet location where you will not be interrupted.
  • Familiarize yourself with the MS Teams interface beforehand.
  • Test your audio and video settings before the test begins.

If you have any questions about the language test, please contact your language assessor or the Public Service Commission.
